Chase Driscoll, Zaronn Cann announced as new assistant men's basketball coaches at Webber
Babson Park, Fla. (07/09/2020) — Webber International University Head Men's Basketball Coach Gabriel Rutledge has announced the addition of new assistant coaches Chase Driscoll and Zaronn Cann to his staff for the upcoming 2020-21 men's basketball season.
"I'm very pleased to announce the addition of both Chase Driscoll and Zaronn Cann to our coaching staff," said Rutledge. "I believe to build a successful program you must work with great people, and both Driscoll and Cann bring skill sets that will bolster our program. I am very excited about these additions and what they will contribute to our program."
Driscoll comes to Webber from Oral Roberts University (Tulsa, Okla.), where he was a graduate assistant men's basketball coach during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. In the spring of 2018, he was a coaching intern at his Alma Mater, the University of North Florida (Jacksonville, Fla.), under his father Matthew Driscoll.
Driscoll said, "Growing up in a basketball family and being around the game a long time, I knew at an early age that God had it in my heart to be a coach, a teacher, a mentor, someone to help develop young people to reach their dreams and become who they want to be. Being able to play the game at a high level, being a graduate assistant for two years and being able to reap what I sow and now it is coming to fruition becoming an assistant coach for Webber International. I am extremely excited for the guys to return to campus and I know that there are great days ahead for the Webber Warriors."
Driscoll played his collegiate basketball at UNF from the 2014-15 season through the 2017-18 season. As a high school player at Bishop Kenny High School (Jacksonville, Fla.), Driscoll helped his team win back-to-back district titles in 2013 and 2014 and make a State Final Four appearance during his junior season.
"I believe that Driscoll's experience will greatly benefit our program in a multitude of ways," said Rutledge. "His knowledge and work ethic that Driscoll brings will impact this program immediately, and we are very fortunate to have him on staff."
Driscoll graduated from UNF with his Bachelor of Arts degree in athletic and education leadership and minored in sports management.
Webber's other new assistant men's basketball coach, Cann, coached at Florida College (Temple Terrace, Fla.) during the 2019-20 season as the Head Developmental Team Coach and Assistant Varsity Men's Basketball Coach.
Cann played professional basketball on the international level in South America, playing in the First Division in Chile for Club Deportes Castro from 2011 through 2013. As a pro, Cann was Import Player of the Year in 2011-12 for Club Deportes Castro. He was also named Finals Most Outstanding Player and was an LNB National Champion. In 2013, he was a First-Team All-League selection.
As a collegiate basketball player, Cann first played at the University of South Florida (Tampa, Fla.) from 2005 to 2007 before attending Eckerd College (St. Petersburg, Fla.) from 2007 through 2010. At Eckerd, Cann finished fourth all-time in program history in single-season field goal percentage (63 percent; 2009-10) and in career field goal percentage (57.2 percent), was a member of an NCAA Tournament team, and in 2010 he was named as a Second-Team All-Sunshine State Conference player.
At Brandon High School (Brandon, Fla.), Cann was a four-year letter winner and starter, was a finalist for McDonalds All-American as a senior in 2005 (averaging 16 points and nine rebounds per game), was a Nike All-American selection, and was a 1,000-point scorer. Selected as the program's Most Valuable Player each of his four years and a team captain for his final three campaigns, Cann is Brandon's all-time wins' leader, and his team at one point held the longest winning streak in the history of Hillsborough County, going undefeated for three years against county opponents. He was ranked among the top-10 players in the state of Florida and among the top-50 players in the nation during his high school career. Cann also earned a pair of letters in track and one in football throughout his time in high school.
Rutledge concluded, "Cann brings an array of experience at multiple levels from his past as a player and as a coach, and that along with his drive to assist players to improve on and off the court will be an invaluable asset to our program. He has worked with some very talented players in recent years and will be able to help develop the next crop of great players here at Webber International University."
Cann graduated from Eckerd in 2010 with his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with a minor in business management. Cann and his wife Jessica have four children: Zachary Izryel, Levi Ziel, Jaelyn Thurman, and Jordyn-Je'Ree Mignonette.
"First and foremost, I want to thank God and my Lord Jesus Christ for continually opening doors and allowing me to organically build the relationships necessary that enable me to walk thru them," said Cann. "Thank you to Coach Rutledge and Director of Athletics Darren Richie for trusting me to be a part of the Webber International family and men's basketball program. Thank you to my wife for her continued support, love and being an awesome mother to our babies. I'm excited to join an awesome team of coaches. Their passion for the program and willingness to do what's needed to bring a lasting culture of success is evident thru and thru. I'm eager to start building bonds with the players and community of Babson Park and surrounding cities. Let's get to work."
