Matt Geer announced as new Assistant Women's Volleyball Coach at Webber
Babson Park, Fla. (07/09/2020) — Webber International University Head Women's Volleyball Coach Gretchen Hand has announced the addition of her new assistant coach for indoor volleyball, Matt Geer.
Geer most recently was named the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at fellow Sun Conference school Johnson & Wales University (Fla.) in January 2020 before the school decided to forego its 2020 volleyball season. He was also the head coach of boys' varsity volleyball at Monsignor Edward Pace High School for two seasons (2019-2020).
"I'd like to thank Athletic Director Darren Richie and Head Coach Gretchen Hand for the opportunity, and I'm excited to join the team at Webber as the school is known for its stellar athletic programs," spoke Geer. "When I stepped onto campus, I saw how much everyone cares about the student-athletes, which sold it to me. It's unfortunate how things turned out, but I believe this move is a blessing in disguise. Coach Hand has big plans for the program and offered me a great opportunity to join when she heard the news. I'm looking forward to working alongside her to continue building on this vision and creating the best atmosphere in a tough time for these student-athletes. Go Warriors."
Before being hired at JWU, Geer spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at NCAA Division-II Barry University. During his time with the Buccaneers, Barry posted a 51-16 record, including a 29-4 mark in 2018 (No. 18 in the final AVCA Top 25) - the team's best record since 2004. The Bucs also recorded back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2018 & 2019), their first such appearances since 2010. Under Geer, Barry had seven all-region selections and four AVCA All-Americans (Megi Buvinic, Audren Rose, Kristina Filimonova, and Anastasiia Samokhvalova).
Prior to joining the Barry staff, Geer coached at Algood Middle School (2014-2018) with four-consecutive winning seasons. His coaching career began in 2012 at Elite Volleyball Training (2012-2015) as well as head coaching club teams: Ethos (2014-2015) and Upper Cumberland Elite (2015-2017).
Geer graduated from Tennessee Tech in 2017 where he earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science. While at TTU, he was a member of the men's indoor club volleyball team from 2009-2012.
Coach Hand said, "It is a great loss for any institution having to close during these uncertain times. We are happy to help and excited to have Coach Geer join our Warrior family. We are committed to bringing in the best talent we can to our coaching staff. Coach Geer has tremendous knowledge within offensive strategy, statistical analysis, and player development. We are gearing up for a fantastic season and look forward to our start date in August."
