Webber women's lacrosse to join Mid-South Conference

Babson Park, Fla. (06/15/2020) — Webber International University Director of Athletics Darren Richie has announced that for Webber's first official season of varsity women's lacrosse competition in 2021, the Warriors' women's lacrosse team will compete as a member of the Mid-South Conference.

Other women's lacrosse programs competing in the Mid-South Conference include Keiser University, the University of the Cumberlands, Life University, Ave Maria University, Marian University, Thomas More University and Georgetown College. Five of those schools were ranked in the top-nine in the NAIA when the season ended last year, including No. 2 Cumberlands, No. 5 Keiser, No. 7 Life, No. 8 Marian and No. 9 Georgetown.

"We are thrilled and excited to be able to join the Mid-South Conference as we begin our women's lacrosse program," said Webber's Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Destinee Johnson. "Being a part of this conference will give us a good and challenging schedule for our first year. We look forward to competing with the other conference schools and helping grow the sport. This will be a great opportunity for our players and our program. I would like to personally thank Webber's Director of Athletics Darren Richie for taking the lead on this and putting the work in to make it a reality."

Richie said, "Women's lacrosse participating next spring in the Mid-South Conference creates great competition within Florida and the Southeast region. This is our third sport competing in that very competitive conference. Thanks to Commissioner Eric Ward for all his support as we work on building a great women's lacrosse team at Webber."

The 2021 Mid-South Conference Tournament for women's lacrosse will be held April 22-24 in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

Women's lacrosse is still considered an invitational sport within the NAIA. The four conferences include the mid-South Conference, the Appalachian Athletic Conference, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, creating four automatic bids to nationals along with four at-large berths.

Webber International University has already been an affiliate member of the Mid-South Conference since 2017, competing in the league for football for three years and men's volleyball now for two years.
